Zadrima lies in the northwest part of our country. Its surface is 349 km2 and its population about 60 000 inhabitants. It is located in two regions: to that of Shkodra and Lezha, with 40 villages distributed in five municipalities: in the Vaudejës Municipality and the Municipalities of Bushat, Hajmel, Dajç and Blinisht.

Zadrima is part of the Western Lowland, in its north side and has generally a flat relief surrounded by ovary shaped, starting from the mountain of Saint Mark, Shite, and the Kresht from the east, as well as the lowest mountains Kakarriqi, Bushati and Beltoja on the west. The field through its areas is characterized by the increase of light and soft hills like those of Pistulli, Mabe, Dajçi, Kodheli, Fishta and Troshani.

Zadrima is crossed by two rivers: the River Drin, which is also known as its northern frontier and Gjader River, which flow together to Lezha.

Records are ancient as human history. These are verified by many documents and precious archaeological objects, well known in the scientific world, as the culture of Gajtan and Koman.

In 394 BC Zadrima was under Byzantine rule. People of Zadrima are distinguished not only as farmers and graziers, but also as patriots and good warriors. Danja, Sapa, Blinisht, or Sarda are well-known battlefield places in history. The Senate of Venice unanimously approved in 1399, to bind close friendship with Zadrima province that was so prosperous.

During the period of Scanderbeg, many meetings of albanian princes were made in the Tower of Zadrima in Blinisht. Even during the Ottoman occupation, Zadrima has kept lighted the fire of movement for freedom. Before the declaration of independence, in the surrounding mountains, were operating the rebellious bands. During the National Liberation War Zadrima supported the war for liberation and made a precious contribution.  Even during the dictatorship years Zadrima again worked for freedom and expected the end of the war.

Zadrima was crossed by crobbled streets as  Lezha–Blinisht-Sape-Naraç-Danje, that reached to Shkodra and continued to Zete. It branches in Danja and it proceeds to Sarde and Kosovo.

Castles of Sarde, Danje and  Sape, though damaged by wars and time, are evidence of an area historically developed, with early civilization and organized in defense.

Zadrima, beside the glorious history, has also a rich cultural inheritance. In Blinisht is opened the first Albanian school, in 1639. In Zadrima were born distinguished figures of history and literature with whom is honored all of Albania:

Lekë Zaharia Prince of Danja and Sapa, comrade and strong supportive side of Scanderbeg;

Gjon Gazulli (1400-1465), a humanist, diplomat of Scanderbeg and his ambassador in Ragusa, mathematician and astronomer, the most distinguished of the time;

Frang Bardhi (1606-1643) linguist and historian, author of the first Latin-Albanian vocabulary, vocabulary that has about 5640 Albanian words and numerals, names of places and a large amount of proverbs and phrases gathered in various regions of Albania;

Gjergj Fishta, one of the greatest authors of Albanian letters, was born in Fishte. He was a writer, translator and author of several works that are recognized worldwide today;

Ndre Mjeda, also a great poet  was from Mjeda and he wrote  his major works in Zadrima;

Prominent figure was also Pjeter Zarishti, which is called as the ” passage bridge ” from the old Albanian literature to the new literary of  National Renaissance;

Dom Jak Zekaj, poet, writer, painter;

Mati brothers and Kel Kodheli, the pioneers of Albanian photography, and many other figures born in Zadrima have made a great  contribution to the culture of our country.

People of Zadrima  are hospitable and good workers. Characteristic for Zadrima are also houses (towers) with two floors, distinguished from their special typology of construction, with stone wall, and once even with the turret like towers.

Dresses of Zadrima are the most beautiful in our country, in which dominate the vivid and optimistic colors,as red yellow and green. Bridal shirts harkate, worked with lot of finesse, with white and yellow silk with qaza embroidered with birds and combined by rhombic figures, with silk, have much fantasy and art. Vests with buttons, with more colors, fodullet artistically worked with silver and gold, necklace and crowns of gold, rings, rizat, almost transparent of that artistic work, show the creative spirit and finesse of women and artisan girls of Zadrima. Men’s clothes are more serious, of white and easy embroidered çakçirë to the end of the shoes, and pockets, with shorter belt than the women, with purple vest or white xhurdi, where dominate thakët dhe tegelat e zeza dhe kësula e bardhë.

Most beautiful  of all are the songs and dances of Zadrima who are distinguished for the variety of melodies, the sweetness , the optimism and its spread.

In short, Zadrima is where we are born and grown, where we have dreamed and realized; enjoyed its beautiful nature where God has knitted with so much perfection, like in paradise, a prosperous land, a sky so clear, a mountain frame, in which greenness, gray and blue are melt into each other arms. There, as the aorta, flows across her beautiful body, two rivers that come together to her heart and  run to lead to the crystal seas the water that is so fine.

We must keep clean and well-dressed our Zadrima, so from her heart may always flow only life, melody, love and gratitude for her good inhabitants.
